India Schools Information
St. Paul's School (Darjeeling)
About School
Located 7500 feet above sea level and acclaimed as the highest public
school in the world, the origin and early history of this well known
institution, the second oldest in Bengal, dates as far back as the
year 1823 when John William Ricketts, a prominent Anglo-Indian leader,
conceived the idea of founding a public school to meet the needs of
the growing Anglo-Indian population in Calcutta.
It began functioning on the 1st of May 1823 in a small two-storied
building at 11 Park Street. It was sometime during the end of 1846
that the Bishop Wilson changed its name to St. Paul's, having brought
it more closely into connection with St. Paul’s Cathedral.
St. Paul’s School is a wholly residential boys’ school founded in
1823. We have around 700 students from Class 1 to Class 12, with each
class having no more than 27-28 students.
School Campus
The school buildings contain the school hall, dining hall, library, science laboratory, dormitories (each with its own bathrooms and lavatories), class rooms, infirmary, dispensary, common rooms, barber shop. The school buildings house comfortably over 250 boys in the Senior Wing and 230 boys in the Primary Wing.
Admission
Boys are admitted to Class 1 if they are 6 years + and
to Class 2 if they are 7 + etc. Boys wishing to join us in Class 11
have to produce their last School exam report (or the Board Exam
report if it has been published).
For admission in Classes 1 to 9 the admission procedure is as follows
-
Parents will have to first purchase the School Prospectus and
Registration Form from the School Office.
Once the Registration formalities are completed, the child will have
to appear for an Entrance Test usually on the last Sunday in August.
Tests are taken in English, Mathematics and Second Language (i.e.
Hindi /Bengali/Nepali). In classes 1, 2 and 3 there is no test in the
second language. Preferably both parents should accompany the child
for an interview with the Rector, which will be held simultaneously.
Admissions to class 11 are processed as soon as the ICSE Exams in
March are over, i.e. around the third week of March every year. The
candidate must appear for an interview with the Rector accompanied by
his parents. He must bring along his last School report or his Board
Exam results if this has already been published.
Extra Curricular Activities
The boys undergo training in camp craft, first aid, cooking, map and compass practice. There are various hobby clubs and socially useful productive work programmes which develop manual, artistic and technical skills. Each of the four Houses in the Senior Wing presents a concert from time to time, and the school’s Dramatic Society stages a play annually in October. Indian and western music and band, elocution and drama, play a large part in the lives of the boys. The school encourages hobbies and societies and every facility is afforded to ensure that a boy has a variety of interests from which he may choose. In the Senior Wing, the hobbies that are encouraged are art & crafts, model making, photography, wood and lathe work, cybernetics etc.
Sports Activities
The major games are cricket, football and hockey. Tennis, badminton, table tennis, squash, basketball and volleyball are also played; and there are short seasons for athletics and cross-country running. There are very few places in the world where Eton Fives is played and St. Paul’s is one of them; this is a sport which is ideally suited to our monsoon conditions .The whole school has fifteen minutes physical training every morning before studies. This is taken by prefects and supervised by the P.T. masters.
