The Doon School (Dehradun)
About School
Satish Ranjan Das, the founder of The Doon School, was one of
pre-Independence India's eminent barristers and a member of the
Executive Council of the Viceroy of India. The Doon School was meant
to provide the youth of the country with an opportunity to get an
all-round education based on an adaptation of the English public
school system on India?s tradition-enriched soil.
In 1929, under the Indian Companies Act, with the help of eminent
Indians, the Indian Public Schools? Society (IPSS) was registered as a
non-profit making body. The IPSS owns the school and manages its
affairs through a Board of Governors.
Affiliation
The school is affiliated with the Council for the
Indian School Certificate Examinations which is one of the two
recognized and approved All India Systems of Secondary Education with
English as the medium of instruction.
The ICSE syllabus includes Hindi, English, Maths, History, Sanskrit,
Sciences. These constitute the compulsory subjects. The optional ones
are, Economics, Art, Music, French and German.
Admission
The school admits boys in January and April every
year. In January, it admits into the 8th standard (C form), and in
April it admits into the 7th standard (D form).
To be admitted in the 7th standard, a boy must be over 11 years and
under 12 years of age in September of the year in which he sits for
the entrance test. To be admitted in the 8th standard, he must be over
12 years and under 13 years of age in September of the year in which
he sits for the test.
Admissions is a two step process. In the first step, boys write an
entrance test conducted in the major metropolitan cities in India
(Bangalore, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur,
Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai and Dehradun). Overseas candidates may take
the test at their respective Indian embassies/consulates.
The written test is held in November of every year. The test consists
of four papers: English, Hindi, Mathematics, and General Knowledge.
In the second step of the admissions process, those boys who qualify
in the written test are invited for a personal interview. The
interviews are usually done in December, at the school and in select
cities in different parts of India (Kolkata, Mumbai, and Bangalore/
Hyderabad/Chennai).
Extra Curricular Activities
Extra curricular activities include Royal Life Saving
Society Tests, Duke of Edinburgh Award Programme and First Aid Courses
of the St. John?s Ambulance Brigade. Boys are encouraged to develop
hobbies and two hours a week are allotted to this pursuit. A choice is
offered among carpentry, wood turning, metal craft, motor mechanics,
photography, aero modelling, chess, first aid, electronics, practical
chemistry, meteorology, dramatics, typing, philately and computers.
The Art School encourages a choice among painting, wood sculpture,
stone sculpture, pottery, ceramic glazing, batik, screen printing and
hand block printing.
The Music School offers instructions in vocal classical music, the
tabla, the sitar, the sarod, the flute, the piano and the guitar.
Creative minded boys contribute to the ?Doon School Weekly?, ?Echo?, ?Arpan?,
and the ?Circle?. French and German are added optional subjects taught
3 times a week.
Sports Activities
Games at the Doon School are played with much fervour
and passion. There is emphasis on regular exercise and physical
fitness. All games are supervised by masters. Team spirit and the
desire to give the best performance possible are our watchwords.
Nationally-trained coaches come to the school to coach the boys, and
the last decade has witnessed a tremendous improvement in the
techniques and performance of our boys.
Cricket, hockey and soccer are seasonal sports. Tennis, table tennis,
badminton, squash, basketball, swimming, boxing, athletics and
gymnastics tournaments are also built into the calendar.
