DAT Entrance Exam for PGDPD Courses at NID 2009
About National Institute of Design
The National Institute of Design offers professional education programmes at Under Graduate and Post Graduate level with 5 faculty streams and 16 diverse design domains. NID is internationally acclaimed as one of the foremost multi-disciplinary institutions in the field of design education and research. The Business Week, USA has listed NID as one of the top 25 European & Asian programmes in the world. The institute functions as an autonomous body under the department of Industrial Policy & Promotion, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India. NID is recognised by the Dept. of Scientific & Industrial Research (DSIR) under Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India, as a scientific and industrial design research organisation.
NID DAT 2009 Eligibility
Candidates having a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent (including those who will be appearing for the qualifying examinations during the academic year 2008-09) in the areas mentioned against each discipline below are eligible to apply.
Upper age limit for candidates is 27 years (relaxable by 3 years for reserved categories) as on June 1, 2009. Candidates with work experience are preferred.

NID DAT Application Process
Application forms along with the prospectus for the ensuing academic year will be made available on request from the second week of October on payment of Rs.1500/- (Rs.750/- for reserved categories) by a Demand Draft of any nationalised bank drawn in favour of the ‘National Institute of Design’ payable at Ahmedabad.
Forms downloaded from NID’s website along with required amount of DD drawn in favour of National Institute of Design payable at Ahmedabad will also be accepted.
Forms can also be obtained from select branches of Bank of India (listed below) on payment of Rs 1500/- towards the cost of the form plus Rs 30/- as bank charges. (Forms at concessional rates to reserved categories are available only from NID, Ahmedabad.)

Product Design (2½ year)
(Requirements : B.E/ B.Tech/ B.Des/ B.Arch/ B.Int.Des/ or equivalent (under 10+2+4 pattern or more).
2. Furniture & Interior Design (2½ year)
(Requirements : Prerequisites as in Product Design)
3. Transportation & Automobile Design (2½ year)
(Requirements : Prerequisites as in Product Design)
4. Ceramic & Glass Design (2½ year)
(Requirements : B.E/ B.Tech/ B.Des/ B.Arch/ B.Int.Des/ BFA/ or equivalent or graduates in any discipline with one year relevant industry experience)
5. Textile Design (2½ year)
(Requirements : B.Des/ BFA/ Graduation in Textile, Knitwear or Fashion, Home Science with Textiles & Clothing, Interior Design, Architecture,Textile or Handloom Technology, or equivalent or graduates in any discipline with one year relevant industry experience).
6. Graphic Design (2½ year)
(Requirements : BFA/ B.Arch/ B.Des/ BVC/ B.Litt/ Graduation in Commn. Media, Film & TV, Mass Media/ or equivalent or graduates in any discipline with one year relevant industry experience or creative pursuits).
7. Animation Film Design (2½ year)

1. Toy & Game Design (2½ year)
(Requirements : Prerequisites as in Product or Graphic Design )
2. Apparel Design & Merchandising (2½ year)
(Requirements : B.Des/ BFA/ Graduation in Textile, Knitwear or Fashion, Home Science with Textiles & Clothing, Interior Design Architecture,Textile or Handloom Technology, or equivalent or graduates in any discipline with one year relevant industry experience).
3. Lifestyle Accessory Design (2½ year)
(Requirements : Prerequisites as in Apparel Design & Merchandising)
4. New Media Design (2 year)
(Requirements : BCA/ BIT/ BSc Comp./ BFA / B.E/ B.Tech/ B.Arch/ B.Des/ BVC/ Degree in Mass Media/ or equivalent or graduates in any discipline with relevant industry experience (knowledge of programming, scripting and computer graphic tools is essential).
5. Strategic Design Management (2 year)
(Requirements : Graduates in any discipline with two years full-time relevant work experience in a design or allied creative organisations. Experience may be relaxed for Post-Graduates).
Programmes offered at R&D Campus, Bengaluru
1. Information & Interface Design (2 year)
(Requirements : Prerequisites as in New Media Design).
2. Design for Retail Experience (2 year)
(Requirements : Design graduates or graduates in any discipline with one year full-time relevant work experience in related field)
3. Design for Digital Experience (2 year)
(Requirements : BCA/ BIT/ BSc Comp./ BFA/ B.E/ B.Tech/ B.Arch/ B.Des/ BVC/ Degree in Mass Media/ or equivalent or graduates in any discipline with one year full-time relevant work experience in digital and allied areas (knowledge of programming, scripting and computer graphic tools is essential)
Admission Procedure
All candidates fulfilling the eligibility requirements will be called for the DAT Entrance Test. Based on scores obtained from DAT, shortlisting of candidates to be called for second phase will be done. The second phase of the admission procedure will consist of studio tests followed by personal interviews at Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and Gandhinagar. The Admission Committee decides the procedures, grades and weightage every year. The norms for the selection are the sole prerogative of the Admission Committee and the decision of the Admission Committee and the Management in any of the matters concerning the admission process and selection will be final.
